Beta-glucan is a polysaccharide found in yeast, croutons and some grains such as oats. Nutritionally, it can be classified as a fiber variety. Beta-glucan fractions can also be used as prebiotics, i.e. nutrients for a beneficial intestinal flora.
Beta-glucan is known for its role in the mobilization of the immune system, which has also been proven by scientific research [1]. The immune system has the ability to recognize pathogens, and when they are “detected” it triggers an immune response in the form of macrophages and T lymphocytes. Although beta-glucan is absolutely safe for health, our bodies treat it as a threat or a potential fungal infection. Then, these structures are rapidly mobilized, but before they can “deal” with the threat, beta-glucan is excreted from the organism. The accumulated macrophages and immune cells remain in the body, forming an effective shield against bacteria, viruses and fungi.
